    "GREAT" Book Club Choice

Our Elk Grove book club just read this book.  I had seen the movie and the play, but don't remember reading the book.  There were large sections I didn't even know took place!  It gave much greater insight to the character of Scout.  Our hostess took the location to the novel at heart when preparing dinner for the group - fried chicken, collard greens and biscuits!!

Has anyone else read this classic lately and if so, do you see the any corrolation between the characters and their personal beliefs of the 1930's with the time it was written (1960)?

Also, how do the other book clubs (that meet in person work)?  Lunch or Dinner or just conversation and snacks?  How do you pick your books?

I will suggest "To Kill A Mockingbird" at our next book club.  Our group is very informal.  We started out doing just snacks, but has gradually moved on to "dinner" - or at least something of substance to eat.  Sometimes people go with the theme of the book, or not.  Food is  totally up to person who's home we are meeting in.  There are 4-6 of us, and take turns having it at homes, meeting once a month.  Our book selection is by-guess-and-by-golly, recommendations we read or hear about, word of mouth, anything.  We do try to stick to books we can find in the library, rather than the newer books, we would have to buy.  Our discussion is not formal at all, but is mostly based on personal reactions, questions we might have, themes we find, and frequently the deeper philosophical questions posed by the book.  Our most recent book was by Jodi Picoult (a favorite author) titled "My Sister's Keeper" -  about a family who has a daughter with leukemia, and so have another daughter, genetically engineered to match ailing daughter, and the effects of one child relied on to save another.  I'm going to post it on this site to see if others have read - we had very emotional responses to this one!

Thanks Trishaw--I'm always curious how others do book clubs.  And thank you for the book recommendation--I am going to pick up My Sisters Keeper this week and post on the Book Discussion you started!
